This project aims to transform an underutilized decked parking lot above Jeongneung Stream near Jegi Subway Station into a pleasant and sensory riverside area for public relaxation. The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to revitalize the 320-meter decked parking structure, located near the Inner Ring Road named Soonhwan-ro, to address the limited riverside rest spaces available to residents. Rather than dismantling the existing decked parking, Seoul has opted for a renovation and expansion approach that respects the original bridge structure while introducing public amenities to improve environmental quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The area surrounding Jegi Station, a historic part of Seoul\u2019s older city center, has long been in need of improvement. The environmental quality of the stream, already degraded by the Inner Ring Road, worsened with the construction of the decked parking lot to meet the demands of nearby shopping complexes, making the area even more hazardous. In response to the lack of green and recreational spaces in this historic urban area, a section of the parking structure will be removed, creating an event space along the water. Additionally, the aged Yongdu Bridge crossing Jeongneung Stream, which had poor pedestrian conditions, will be widened to establish a welcoming entry plaza, offering expansive views and a gateway to the riverside rest area. The narrow flow of Jeongneung Stream has been adjusted to accommodate more water, enhancing the prominence of the riverside stage. Grandstand-style seating descending toward the riverside stage serves both as audience seating and an entry pathway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the parking structure above, a wood-structured, hill-shaped deck with amenities overlooks the riverside stage, offering a peaceful urban retreat. The structure and materials were carefully selected to balance load-bearing capacity with familiarity with construction. A needs assessment revealed that citizens wanted facilities such as a caf\u00e9, restrooms, elevators, and green spaces. The amenities, connected to the wooden deck, are located underneath it, with abundant landscaping above and alongside the riverside. Trees are planted directly into the ground whenever possible, allowing roots to deepen over time, which will enrich the canopy and provide ample shade. This mature greenery will serve as a vital source of comfort and satisfaction, establishing a healing environment in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The riverside also provides a playground for the younger generation. A new skateboarding park is planned, envisioning it as a key social space for youth. Lighting and a media facade are designed to create a bright, inviting environment, illuminating the space beneath the deck with energy and vibrancy. Elevators and stairs connect directly to the wooden deck, offering convenient access. Sheltered from rain and snow, the skate park will become a favorite gathering spot for young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
